Updating distros

So, I've been managing linux workstations and web/file servers for about 2 years now, and, as hard to believe as it may be, I've never tried installing a new version of a distro on top of the old/current version.

Is it even possible? What configuration stuff, if any, will I have to re-do... how about installed services and apps?

Basically, I've got Fedora Core 1, all updated and what-not. However I'd like to download & install the FC3 cd's on top of the current installation. I'm just worried it might overwrite all my configurations, which would be an utter pain considering things like the hassle of a qmail installation etc.

Can anyone let me know what stays in tact and what needs to be reconfigured?

There have been lots of changes from FC1 to FC3 so upgrading probably isn't such a great idea--better off with a fresh install. If you have /home on a seperate partition you can save yourself lots of backup work. If you would like some more detailed advice, is great.
