Update returning Failed to Fetch errors and unable to install apps

When attempting to do an sudo apt update I get a load of Failed to fetch messages as below.

Code:
E: Failed to fetch http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/xenial/main/binary-i386/Packages  404  Not Found [IP: 2001:67c:1360:8001::22 80]

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I'm also unable to sudo apt install programs, it returns a message such as:
Code:
E: Unable to locate package fdupes
It's not that I can't access the internet as everything else works fine such as web browsing, email, FTP etc.

How can I fix this issue?

Many thanks for any help.

PS
I'm using Linux Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS on a Raspberry Pi 3.

Maybe the mirror is updating while you are trying to update. It happens.

It's lasted a few days now and my other machines update fine.

OK so why would it be looking for i386 material if there is none? I guess at some point in the past I may have added non standard repos and this is causing it to look in the wrong place for updates. Would that make sense? If so how do I remove then nonstandard repositories?

Cheers

You just comment (#) the pertinent lines from /etc/apt/sources.list. But the sources in question are main repositories. I think xenial just discontinued the i386 (32-bit) branch.
