Update my linux


hi

I have Red Hat Linux Box and I want to do some major updates - upgrades
I know I have to take a full backup...but I have not options for that

in your opinion what files I should tar to have them in case any update goes wrong?

passwd?
groups?


anything else?

Tar your /etc directory. That contains most of your system configuration.

Of course back up all your personal files in your /home/user directory.

What typs of updates, or upgrades are you planning? Most updates only affect one application at a time, so the need is not as great for backup.

Upgrades imply you are changing levels of the OS. Which is it?

interesting thanks a lot
basically it is going from CentOS5.0 to 5.4 but using the DVD not yum because my servers are in pretty secure area and no internet connection is allow
