Afraid it's rather long, but there are some Warnings near to the end!

Have not run "apt autoremove" yet, please let me know when to go ahead.

I have started with a new terminal for each of your instructions so far, but is this the correct way to do this, or should I have just added each new code onto the bottom? (as stated, I'm not familiar with using a terminal, completely out of my comfort zone!)

Output:

bill@bill-System-Product-Name ~ $ apt upgrade

That looks fine. Those warnings can be ignored.

You can run apt autoremove now and no, you don't need to open a new terminal window each time, you can just use the same terminal window.

Have run "apt autoremove", do you want me to send output?

What about those Warnings, do I need to do anything to sort out?

Do I leave the default mirror (American flag), or should the original mirror be re-installed (Union Jack flag), and if so, how?

I'm afraid I need to rush out now (Tescos!). I'll come back on here later on, but very quickly (i) No, you don't need to paste the output from the autoremove command if it appeared to work ok; (ii) No, the warnings can be ignored; (iii) You can if you want choose a more local mirror: run Software Sources from the Mint Menu, click on the either of the US flags and you'll see different mirrors with their speeds - select one. I would suggest sticking with the main repository http://packages.linuxmint.com (i.e. not changing it) for tara and selecting the UK http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu for bionic.

Hi Hydrurga

You lost me completely with "tara" and "bionic" on the answer to (iii), but main problem sorted, so probably best to leave as it is.

Thank you for spending so much of your time sorting this problem out for me.

As I do not understand terminal commands at all, it was absolutely terrifying seeing all that script scrolling endlessly down the screen and having not the faintest idea what it all means, but thankfully, you clearly know exactly what was happening and have solved the problem.

Once again, many thanks for all your help.

tara is one of the latest versions of mint and bionic is bionic beaver ubuntu 18.04.1. these are the various names for each release of a specific distro. am glad you got it all worked out. Enjoy!

oh - bodhi from what i understand is 4, 4.5, and now 5 - with point releases added as it develops. there is no name as in mint or ubuntu.

No problem. I was in such a rush to go and get my weekly shopping done that I forgot you are running Mint Sarah. Sorry. I'm running Mint Tara. For "tara" read "sarah" and for "bionic" read "xenial". Those names are written to the left of the flags in Software Sources.

To explain, Mint is based off a parent distribution, Ubuntu, and thus uses software from both its own repositories and from Ubuntu's repositories. The parent distribution of Mint Sarah is Ubuntu Xenial, hence "sarah" and "xenial".
