Update Manager Glitch

Hey gang-

I just installed my first Linux OS, Umbuntu 10.04 LTS. I've actually been using this OS for a few months at my work and fell in love with it. Things run smooth and are very stable. Though when I installed it on my computer I noticed a weird glitch with the Update Manager.

Whenever I'm updating and running another program at the same time the whole system seems to crash and I am taken to a "boot up" screen though nothing boots. Then the screen goes black and has a row of white vertical lines that flash on and off, which never seems to have an end. So far I've just been rebooting the whole machine and then it seems fine.

Has anyone else come across this type of problem before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't help with the weird issue, but I may be able to help with the re-boot.

Instead of re-booting, try restarting the X server with ctrl+alt+backspace, which will take you back to your user login screen. Re-boots are seldom necessary.

Thanks for the tip, BigRig. I will try that next time for sure.

Seems like the problem isn't just isolated to the Update Manager after all. My sister said the same thing happened to her while just surfing the net. The computer is actually her computer that she got for free from a coworker.
