update manager

I try to use update manager in Linux Ubuntu 7.10 gutsy gibbon but get this error message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I use dpkg --configure -a in terminal and it asks for super user priviligies and I try to use the same password as when I enter Ubuntu. Is it the same? It looks strange in terminal because it's like no of my keyboard press is registered in terminal?

Run is as root: sudo dpkg --configure -a, when you enter your password, there won't be an echo. Everything is just fine
