unstable Mandrake OS - newbie

Hello,
thanks to several of you, I have finally got Mandrake 9.1 installed, working and Networked. Thanks

However, all is not well with my new install:

1). Every 1 in 3 bootup fails - either to the login screen (and not letting me type anything) or to nowhere.
2) Loads of applications crash. Sometimes, when I boot, 75% of apps jsut crash, or fail to load.
3). When I play video clips, the performance is awful

where should I start in putting these things right?

Thanks

With this many failures, I wonder if it is a problem with interupts on your computer. You may try booting up with the option noacpi.

"option noacpi". whats that then?

It disables the ACPI power functions (advanced power functions such as standby), if I'm not mistaken.

hmm this sounds alittle like something that happened to me

what is your system made of
take mine for example i have
64 megs of ram
an intel celereon @ 633 MHz
no graphic card (no input, i use mobo)

any way i have an awful time with video files (at the moment)
the boot problem i had a few times, i fixed by reinstalling and stopped and things to system files that i was not sure a bout posting
and the program crash thing might be your ram or your cpu (which is what mine are becasue of) lol

I think turning off acpi is acpi=off. There is also an option noapic (apic, not acpi).

at the lilo menu, press ESC and then at the prompt:
linux acpi=off noapic

you can also edit your /etc/lilo.conf file. Just go the append= line and add acpi=off and/or noapic. Then run lilo:
lilo -v

reboot.
