Unstable Mandrake 2006
Hello everyone
I currrently installed the Mandrake 2006, and I got my wireless network kicking on it now. But I've notice the OS itself is incredibly unstable, it crashes for no apparent reason. I would go to click on something and it would hang on me. Now i'm wondering if that's because Mandrake 2006 was released with a ton of bugs??? if so, is there anything I can do to fix this? Or, should I just move on to another distribution, like Suse or red hat, or Debian?? What distributions is best? Thank you |
"What distributions is best?"
This is a very common question. It all is determined on what you want to do. |
Try getting all the updates using Mandrake Update. Mandriva 2006 works fine for me.

If you have a package called "kat" installed, uninstall it.

2006 has presented the most issues immediately post install. What I did, was uninstall kat, as per reddazz suggestion. I also had to reset my resolution and refresh rate frequency (normally it's set at either 1600x1200 @ 75hz or 1280x1024 @ 85 hz for this monitor - a philips 201B) and I also had to modify my mouse settings in the xorg.conf file - previously I'd always used IMPS/2 for the protocol and option "ZAXIS MAPPING" "4 5" to manage the scroll - though for reasons I don't follow, the install had decided to use EXPLORERPS/2 and "6 7" for the scroll option. I'd never heard of that protocol so I just changed it back to IMPS/2 and just changed the other option back - I understand that the "6 7" thing is to do with mega complicated mice i.e. 6 or 7 button ones. My logitech cordless is definitely 4 buttons, but the scroll is also "clickable" hence the "4 5" option I've set. I also only ever install mandriva RPMS from sources listed at easy urpmi (select OS version and follow instructions). This has removed just about all instability issues - Just occassionally, if I have to log in as root (graphically), and happen to have multiple windows/apps open I get a freeze - well more like a big fuzzy line down the middle of the screen - though it's as if the screen view has been "chopped in half" with the right and left sides inverted, but seperated by the big fuzzy line. To sort that, I just kill the session with Ctrl+Alt+Delete/Backspace and re-login (though now I've added "file manager as super user" to my menu under system. It has the command kdesu konqueror - so as soon as I click it I have to provide root password and then I can do the stuff I want to do, in a root filemanager window, but still in the user account - I haven't had any of the above screen issues there). HTH some. regards John |
When I boot up Mandriva 2006, the loading screen freezes. Any suggestions?
