Unreadable external USB data storage(hdd)

Given: Laptop o/s:Xandros 3.0.3 Business Ed
Hardware: dell c840laptop

Question: USB port recognizes external data storage (hdd in case) with installed o/s Xandros 3.0.3 Business Ed (same as laptop), BUT freeze occurs, rendering laptop system slow/frozen and rendering external hdd in case unusable and unreadable. In a desktop, this would likely be the result of an IRQ conflict. What's happening here?

Impossible to say whether it is a hardware or software problem at the moment but is the external drive formatted windows NTFS?

It appears that you have upgraded from 2 to 3 but it is still unsupported.
