Unmet dependencies

Good day, I am using Ubuntu 16.04. I tried to download Kodi and I get met with the following message " You have unmet dependencies unable to correct problems. You have held broken packages"
I have searched and tried many suggestions without success. If anyone has any ideas I will be very grateful. I am not sure how to post the terminal print out but the above covers the main points.

Hello and welcome to the forum

You didn't mention which solutions you tried or the unmet dependencies but in case knudfl's suggestion doesn't work, please post the output in it's entirety from download to the error message in question.

You can also take a look at these other solutions...

http://askubuntu.com/questions/88809...roken-packages

http://askubuntu.com/questions/22323...roken-packages

Thank you both for your assistance. Could you please tell me how to attach file please? I am not sure on how this is done. Basically I have tried both suggestions without success. I have screen shots but not sure how to attach them.
It shows two kodi bins have broken dependencies. Please have patience with me. my profile might explain. When I know the correct way I will be able to give you as much information as possible. I originally had the 16.1 version of kodi but when trying to upgrade to 17 something went wrong and I ended up with Kodi 18 alpha. After removing this version and trying to reinstall kodi I ended up with broken packages. Thank you.

do you mean you tried to install kodi "the windows way"? download from the wild web, doble-click to install? wrong!
you should install kodi from ubuntu's repos, as outlined in post #2.

Thank you Ondoho,
I did install kodi the correct way it is only when I tried to upgrade to 17 that my problems started, I ended up with
version 18 alpha. I uninstalled it and tried reinstall kodi. This is when I ended up with the dependencies problem. If I could get this problem resolved I could try another sudo apt-get install kodi
Many thanks.

let me re-iterate:
1) you installed kodi with apt (software center or command line, doesn't matter)
2) you were unhappy with the version provided by ubuntu and force-fumbled your way to a higher version
3) things started falling apart

i think you can see from my choice of words that point 2) was probably wrong.
to assess the situation we need a lot more information about this point 2).

Thank you. If you could explain how I post the screen shots I can show you exactly what I am left with. Your help is really appreciated.

Hi ondoho, I will do as you request. Trying to install kodi.
kodi kodi-bin kodi-data
bryan@dave-X200:~$ kodi kodi-bin kodi-data
The program 'kodi' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt install kodi
bryan@dave-X200:~$ Mukumw4nj1
Mukumw4nj1: command not found
bryan@dave-X200:~$ sudo apt install kodi
sudo: unable to resolve host dave-X200: No such file or directory
[sudo] password for bryan:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
kodi : Depends: kodi-bin (>= 2:16.1~git20160425.1001-final-0xenial) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kodi-bin (< 2:16.1~git20160425.1001-final-0xenial.1~) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
I followed the steps as given by kodi "How to install kodi for Linux

This is as far as I can get. I always end up with the unmet dependencies. The command Mukumw4nj1 was my password. I should have started the installation at that stage.

The line "sudo: unable to resolve host dave-X200: No such file or directory" Always appears. I was given this laptop by my son in Ireland and he modified the password for me. This has never caused any problems.

Wow.
You should really get rid of all those old kernels.

I'm guessing there are multiple conflicting versions of those kodi packages in the various repo's you have active, and some investigation with apt-cache policy, or the aptitude interface might help you.
