what do you think is better? UNIX or LINUX?

If you have to have a server and run a very important site with thousands of visits per second, I think it is better to have unix (like solaris), as it is optimised for that particular platform and is generations ahead of other OS(particularly windows).

If you just need a desktop, then Linux is the best bet, as it is easier to use than unix.

There is no "better" it all depends.

By the way, one of the major reason why companies use Unix solutions is that they want support (read accountability) from the vendors.

ie. When your AIX server is having problems, you can count on IBM to fix it (or replace it), due to your service contract.

You can do the same with Linux machines as well, either internally (employ a Guru for example), or externally (buy Red Hat support contract for example).

So in the end, my prior answer still stands... it all depends :)

Both of them have the same security system coz linux is build under unix, usually linux is called unix like system.

Its depend on the money problem. If you to buy, buy unix, but if you want the free one, go get the linux.

I have to disagree. Security isn't within the Operating System by default, its the person who administers it. Even Windows can be secure, if the right person is administering it properly, well, in most cases, as long as there are security patches out there, etc in extreme cases.

And the money, I don't agree with that either. If I want support, I'll buy support for anything. Its not about cheap or free. You can have Unix like Solaris without all the support, its just the different needs, but nothing regarding money.

Linux isn't built under Unix, it is Unix like but its not Unix.

Of course to help confuse things there are the BSDs, which are another set of unix-like OSes.

when it comes to software compatibility would free bsd be better as far as security when compared to linux? esp red hat .. ? and since i am a noob, and never hearing of bsd . . . is it the same as linux when it comes to shell and etc?

andox... security doesn't rely on the OS... but more towards the competency of people admin'ing them.

I agree with you too, but compare to windoze, unix and linux have little security hole although both of them have it. If you talking the administrator, ofcourse the more better the administrator the better the security on that machine, but you should consider that not everyone in here can do a properly administering on our machine, maybe some of us can but there are a lot of newbie here include myself too.

Regarding the money, i mean :
if i want the free ones, i will get the linux instead of the free unix.
but if i want to pay, ofcourse i will go to get the unix.
