Uninstalling when installed from Tarball

A small questions about tarballs.
I've read the Mandrake Reference Guide concerning unpacking and installing. But I haven't found anything on uninstalling installed packages/

After installing from a tarball, how can you uninstall ?

For example, installing java via a *.tar.gz file.

Do you have to manually delete all its entries, or how does this work ?
Does this vary depending on what package you installed ?

Being asked all the time, have a search on the forum
for details.

In the specific case of Java you'll have to actually
do the clean-up manually, I guess ... things that come
with the ./configure && make mechanism are best
handled with checkinstall ...

Cheers,
Tink

normally you would cd to the directory that you built in and
do a "make uninstall" as root.

For example untarring mypackage.0.0.tar.gz creates the directory

mypackage.0.0

This is where you did:

./configure
make
make install

Cd to that directory and do:

make uninstall (as root)

If you've deleted that directory you're on your own.

You may be able to re-download, re-untar (to the same place),
re-install, then do a "make uninstall" , but I don't know if that will
work.
