Uninstalling Red Hat 9 how to?
 

Hey folks i need to uninstall linux on my 80 gig seagate so i can give it to my inlaws. I was wondering if you guys or gals could tell me how to remove linux and get my Master Boot Record back to just windows. When i get my other hard drive i plan on putting in Suse for a go.

Any Help would be great.

You can use the RH installer to remove the Linux partitions... Run through the installer to the part where you make partitions, and delete the Linux parti's off the drive. Then exit the installer.

How to restore the MBR depends on the version of Windows...

If you have XP on the system, before removing Linux, boot to XP and go through the Control Panel and find the hard-drive control section. I don't know exactly where it is. You'll be able to restore it in there.

If you have 2000, I think you'll need to boot the install CD and go through the recovery system.

If you have ME/98/95, you'll need a boot floppy. Boot from that, and run "fdisk /mbr".

You might want to be sure you have the MBR fixed before removing Linux.

a couple of simple ways:
1. use partition magic
2. reinstall windows

is that the only HD in that computer?
does it contain important data?
can it be wiped?

if not you can boot off the windoze xp cd and go to the recovery console.
from there use the fixmbr command.

hey thanks guys this really helps me a lot. I dual boot with win2k and i have 2 hard drives. The windows install is on my 40 gig hard drive and the linux is on my 80gig. This shouldnt be as difficult as i first thought.

fdisk /mbr also works for XP as well, at least it worked for me
