uninstalling nautilus

I have RH 7.3 with Gnome installed. I quite like Gnome (tried KDE for a while but didn't like it), but I don't like nautilus.
It's too slow and takes up way too much memory. I've heard of people uninstalling nautilus. I would like to do that, but where would that leave gnome?
Is nautilus an intrinsic part of gnome or does gnome fair well without it.

Btw I use MC as my file manager now.

i'm quite sure gnome works without nautilus. well, you could rpm it away i guess. if there's some hanging dependencies somewhere (which i doubt), you could always rpm it back.

You can run GNOME without Nautilus. It does not need it. Just run Package manager and uninstall it.
