Someone help! I tried to install red hat, i have a windows me system. i oringinally used partition magic to partition hard drive. ran into alot of problems, uninstalled it. although i had already partitioned hard drive. then i installed linux, wouldn't boot. got this message, general protection fault, swapper, not syncing? what do i do. in the process of all this i wiped out windows me and red hat won't boot. if anyone can tell me what to do it would be great. thanks

do the installation again, but this time let
linux do the partitioning for you it is a much safer option ,in another case if you want ME back use a dos disk and perform fdisk/mbr to get rid of linux at the mbr and do a fresh install of ME |
Re: uninstall linux
I don't mean to sound dumb, but dos disk. i am new to the techie world as well. I think I know what you are talking about, but I just want to make sure, Thanks for your help, I REALLY appreciate it.

I mean a Windows Me bootable disk,or a dos bootable
disk with fdisk program in it |
uninstall and reinstall
All you Gurus,
How do I completely uninstall a current version and reinstall the same again? I am running red hat 6.0 and am having some problems (many....to be honest since Im a complete novice..a rookie) Any help would be heartily appreciated |
Pyramid,
The quickest way, which won't save any data, would be to just reinstall RH6. During the configuration process you will create your partitions. After you set up your partitions the next screen will show the partitions that you have decided to create. Make sure that the partitions that you have created are selected before selecting the "next" button. By selecting the partitions, you have told the installation to format those filesystems prior to installation. You might want to make sure that you have selected the error checking button at the bottom of the screen as well. It will take a bit longer, but will check your drive for any errors. Good luck. Thanks Bilsabub,
I reinstalled RH6 and am now having problems configuring X Windows. While installation of moniter and Video card, the probe always resulted in an error and so I gave up and went ahead and finished installaling without those options. When I type X or xstart at the prompt I get some errors related to the moniter settings and video card. Also, I did not configure/install a ethernet/PCMCIA device during installtion, can I do this now? I have a 3com 3c589D-TP card. Any help? |
lilo
Can someone please help! I called copaq at my proble, they sent me some quickrestore cd, to get the computer back to it's original state. After several attempts we finally got Windows ME back, but when I went to set up the internet again, it couldn't detect a modem, so we had to start over with the quick restore cd, well things were worse this time couldn't get windows me back at all, the guy told me that it was probably lilo at the mbr, but there were non dos partitions when we rean fdisk. I don't know what to do. Does anybody have any suggestions.

Re: lilo
hi
get yourself a ms-dos diskette,in case you don't have that use a ME bootable,or Windows 98 bootable floppy to boot your computer, once booted run fdisk, remove the non-dos partition (option 4),once done when you try to delete the extended or logical partition you should face problems. that is how linux goes, after deleting the non-dos partition exit the fdisk utility and go back to command prompt ie. a:\ here you run fdisk/mbr that should completely rid your machine of linux in the mbr you can then boot your machine from the hard disk now and you will see that you will land up at c:\ this is it your machine is as good as new now you can start the Me installation now if this doesn't work i have other solutions but for now try the above regards |
I have totally none, a number of times. The guy from Compaq support said that it's probably lilo and I need to use a third party utility that consists of FDISK. Anyway, I did exactly what you said, but when I go to fdisk there aren't any non-dos partitions. I can see that and the computer tells me that. Now I don't actually have the Windows ME cd, it was already installed on my computer, but like I said I have teh Quickrestore cd and it is supposed to put the computer back to it's normal state. The cd actually brought me back, but i was having trouble locating my modem to set up the internet which is why I'm back to square oe. I really appreciate you helping me. I'm about ready to give up!:(

I meant to say I have totally done that a number of times!
|
that quick restore cd that compaq has given you is supposed
to do everything for you ,that cd is not like the normal winMe cd you can buy off the shelf the only people who can help you are those guys at compaq and none of us ,once you get me running fine ,you can ask for fresh instructions on installation of Linux the other option is buy yourself the winME cd from the shelf ,you know regards |
uninstalling Linux/problems with
I'm a complete newbie aswell and when I first started using Linux I came up against all manner of problems when trying to remove it. My advice to you is the following:
Use Norton GHOST! You can 'install' windoze and all of your programs from the Ghost CD you make in approx. 15mins. Without having to reboot about 30times! |
I always preferred winblows.
..Just because I use it, doesn't mean I can't poke fun at it. It plays games with me all the time. |
