How did you try to install it? More details, please.
The correct way would have been to run sudo apt-get install gcc, or sudo apt-get install build-essential.

The correct way of getting a fully working gcc is : sudo sudo apt-get install g++

Or with "sudo apt-get install build-essential" , see post #2.
I.e. 'build-essential' will install {g++, autoconf} + all their dependencies,

I may well be wrong but I thought you got gcc included in pretty much every Distro?

Play Bonny!

It's included in Slackware (full GCC: C, C++, Obj C, Fortran, Ada, etc), but not in Debian, Ubuntu, Mint & the rest of that "family". Can't remember whether other distros have it by default or not.

It's not in RHEL/CentOS or OpenSUSE by default either.
