unicode box instead of X close button

I am running Xfce and I have this strange issue with my apps that are pinned on the bottom panel. If I hover the pointer over one of these apps, the thumbnail preview shows an Unicode box instead of the "x" button. However, this doesn't happen with any other kind of window, where the "x" is displayed correctly.

Could be a font issue with xfce4-panel.
Are you sure it's a Unicode box (font glyph placeholder) though?

Yes, it's 2A2F, it should be the unicode for the X symbol, and its showing up on top right of the thumbnail. In fact, when I click on this box the app closes.
UPDATE: got the explanation from the dev, it was much more trivial than I thought . The repos of my distro don't have DejaVu Fonts, so as a temporary workaround I downloaded these fonts from upstream and moved them to a newly created /fonts folder in my home directory.
