unformatting hard drive that was attached to NSLU2 device

We have had a Linksys NSLU2 on our network that uses Linux. It had a USB hard drive. I would like to "unformat" it for use on a Windows system or on a Sabio Datavault NAS that uses Linux. What would be the proper procedure? Can't find anything in the Linksys manual about unformatting, just that once it is formatted by the slug, it can't be used on Windows. Is there a way to tell the drive to forget about the existing format and let me reformat with whatever I choose?

Just reformat it. You will loose all the data on the drive. You MAY also be able to access the information currently on the drive using a special windows EXT3 driver (at least I think the NSLU2 uses ext3). I forget the name of the driver.

Thanks for the response. I did plug it into a Windows XP machine and it gave me an unsupported format error and everything stopped. Windows did not assign it a drive letter so how would I format it without telling which drive to format?

Been a long time since I did windows. I think it is Fdisk or whatever it is you use to make partitions. Since it is seeing a file system (even if it does not know how to handle it) it is not assigning it a drive letter.
