Undetected Sound Card

Hello there.
I am using Mandrake 8.0, and cannot hear sound well at all (and sometimes not at all). The problem I am having is as follows:
-Sometimes I can hear sound, but it is of an _extremely_ low quality (it sounds very digitized and grainy)
-If I am lucky enough to hear sound (it's on and off), the volume is very low.
-xmms and other applications give me an error saying that my sound card is misconfigured, or not there.
-The sound is behind the event that triggered it (for example, in a game when a shot is fired, it will take about 5 seconds for the sound of the shot being fired to play).

I have tried to configure the sound card using Mandrake Control Center (per xmms's instructions), it recognizes the sound card, it correctly identifies it as an Intel Corp. AC'97 Audio card (embedded), but it won't play the sound it is supposed to in the test.

Intel doesn't provide drivers, so what am I to do?

What in the heck it going on???

Thanks in advance,
oostevo

Hi !!!
Not sure, but look on your kernel modules to see if you have support for your card, or you can try the alsa drivers here:

http://www.alsa-project.org/

give them a try, but carefull with beta drivers cause I can't make them work.
