understanding the linux kernel

i am an undergraduate student and i am undergoing a course in operating systems.cna somebody tell me if i could see the linux kernel source itself and see how all those concepts are applied or the kernel of some other precursor of unix maybe?

Do you have a Linux box up and running??
One can always go to ....../usr/src/Linux(version)directory
the Documentation folder there is 5+ megs!! including 1.6 megs in open texts, everything you want to know about the Linux Kernel.
