Under water trying to set up Hadoop on Oracle VM with Ubuntu 12.04 on it...

Hello All! I am taking an online course to learn Hadoop, however, when it came time to set Hadoop up on my pc for the course, I discovered that I needed to learn a lot more before I could proceed...like have a modicum of Linux knowledge. My difficulty is learning how to write code in the terminal window. Can anyone direct me to a good source to learn this?

I also recommend installing vim-full then typing vimtutor so you can learn how to use a powerful, customizable text editor in less than an hour. If you're willing to shell out a bit of cash, consider buying this book. http://www.nostarch.com/tlcl.htm It's a great resource for learning about the Linux command line.
