Undeleting a user?

Hi, I recently made a very stupid beginner's mistake: erasing a user, and thus his home.

It happened while trying to "help" a colleague, transfering his data from one hdd to another, and I got confused between user accounts on different PCs. (and then we found that that his backups are encrypted and no one knows the key!!)

When I erased the user, not much happened (the hdd did not make a lot of sound), and inmediately after I realised what I had done, I stopped using the hdd, mounting it as read-only.

I imagined the dat would be easy to recover, but haven got very far with ext3grep, extundelelete, testdisk nor photorec.

Does anybody know a good solution for this? Any way to undelete a user?

Thanks, Salvador

The only good solution is to restore from a backup. You may be able to use testdisk, but it's going to take a lot of time and a lot of work to re-organize things properly, and you won't get back everything (maybe those few critical files you need though, assuming it's just a few).

How can nobody know the key to the backups? How old are they?
