Ubuntu 5.04 Solved my Problems!

Well this weekend I got brave...I tried another distro. I was using Fedora Core 3 to start with, but I was having problems with my sound and Cedega/Point2Play for my games. I decided maybe Fedora Core 3 isn't for me after all...So I did some research on www.distrowatch.com ...and it seems Ubuntu has been in the top 3 for the past 1-3 months.

Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary) is Alpha (beta). BUT WOW!!! I downloaded the LiveCD version first to make sure it was good enough, EVERYTHING worked on the LiveCD of Ubuntu Hoary. So I download the full install....best move I've made so far for Linux!! I haven't seen a crash or anything go wrong yet even though its still Beta.

Ubuntu is Debian based, and has the feel of Mandrake/Windows XP. Everything is well organized and easy to find! Nvidia drivers? They installed EASY with APT-GET. Cedega/Point2Play now works alot better! No more Error 21 like Fedora! No more fixing before I have to play!

For Linux Newbies, I would suggest Ubuntu if your having problems with Fedora Core 3. Even if you use Mandrake you should just try it.

Ubuntu is doing a great job of promoting Debian and it looks like it is replacing stock Debian Testing on many desktops. The user community is very helpful and active as well (don't miss their forums). I think what they are doing is great - they are basically doing their own branch of Debian instead of - like so many others - doing a Debian derivate and trying to hide what it really is. They are also feeding everything they do back to the main Debian development branch which is a huge plus too.

Good people, good distribution. I recommend it highly as well.

It is a great distro, my fav so far. didn't much care for Fedora as like the apt features of debian. I love the distro, and if you would rather have KDE instead of Gnome, they now offer a version built around KDE. It is called Kubuntu i think and you can find links to dl it through distrowatch.

:newbie:

PS: Debian install is a snap, no matter what anyone says.

I have to wholeheartedly agree! I installed 5.04 last week and though there were a few stumbles along the way, everything is running just fine now thank you. THIS is the Linux that I had wanted. I previously tried Suse8.2 and it was NOWHERE near as user friendly as Ubuntu is. I highly recommend it to any Linux newbie that is looking, once and for all, to migrate from Windows.
