My smb.conf is

path = /user1
public = no
only guest = yes
writable = yes
valid user = user1

Remove the Guest Only directive? I believe what is happening is that With Only Guest even though you are probably connecting with user1 it is still taking on guest access. Also guest access uses Share Level permissions and not local permissions.

Also did you create a smbpasswd for user1.

Are you unable to write to it locally or from another computer?

If it's from another computer, check the directory permissions. They may not align with the Samba configuration. If you want everyone (that is, "owner," "group," "everyone") to be able to write to it, they should look like this:

Code:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 [owner] [group] 17 Aug 13 12:48 /path/to/some/directory
