Unable to use ethtool after installing

I would like to use the ethtool application to help me trouble shoot some issues with an old router I scrounged up. Once I can get it working I can find my way but despite the fact that ethtool is installed and up to date any time I type ethtool into the terminal it says it cannot be found. I suppose I may have to add it to my path. Unfortunately I am pretty new to Linux and do not know how to do so. I would appreciate any assistance. I am using sparky Linux on a dell Vostro laptop.

Hi,

Try using the command as root since you want to make system changes. Look at this for a useful guide;
Quote:
man ethtool;
NAME
ethtool - query or control network driver and hardware settings

SYNOPSIS
ethtool devname

ethtool -h|--help

ethtool --version

ethtool -a|--show-pause devname
Be sure to look at all the 'man ethtool' to understand available options.

Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!
