Probably just that sata wasn't supported in older linux kernels,
Fedora 8, and the competition, will be on linux magazine cover dvds,
so if upgrading to the newer kernels is not workable for you, I would
just buy or borrow a cheap ide drive, backup your files, and do a new
install of a distro that you have reason to believe will meet your needs. PClinuxOS, Fedora, SUSE, Mepis, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Gentoo, its
always early Christmas and birthdays at the periodicals stand, cover dvds being the norm!

With a newer distro you will still have to ensure that SATA support is compiled into the kernel.

Also be aware that there is a GRUB issue with a mix of PATA and SATA drives on the same system. I suggest you read this:

Fedora 8 is on the cover of January Linux Format mag.
