unable to mount CD or DVD

Hello all. I am having a strange problem all of a sudden. If I put an audio CD in either my cdburner (/dev/hdc/) or DVDRom (/dev/hdd/) I get a huge string of error messages. I am unable to mount either device, I get a pop up error box that says
Code:
/dev/hdd: Input/output error
mount: block device /dev/hdd is write-protected, mounting read-only
/dev/hdd: Input/output error
mount: /dev/hdd: can't read superblock
Please check that the disk is entered correctly.
Here is the output of dmesg -
Code:

I searched for these errors, and some suggested it was problem within X, so I tried shutting X down and mounting from the CLI. That also fails with the same messages. The CDs themselves are fine, I can play them on my stereo. I don't think it could be a bad drive, as I mentioned I tried both of my CD drives, and they both produce the same errors. I appreciate any suggestions that people have about how to correct this. I have hundreds of CDs to rip into mp3 and flac formats, but can't do so at present.

[EDIT]I just put a DVD in to see if that would work, and it did, so whatever the problem is, it is somehow tied specifically to the ability to read audio CDs.[/EDIT]

Thanks for your time!
Peace,
JimBass

try running:
Code:
chmod a+wr /dev/hdc && chmod a+wr /dev/hdd
this should make the permissions of both drives (cd and dvd) read/write for all users.
Try inserting a cd and tell me if it makes any difference.

What does your '/etc/fstab' file show for mount type?
"udf,iso9660"?

Thanks for the suggestion, but that had no effect, still the same output to dmesg, and the same pop up error box.

This wasn't a problem in the past either, I could always mount cd and dvds as regular user, and still was able to mount a DVD just moments ago to watch with totem.

Thanks in any case!

Peace,
JimBass

Key lines of /etc/fstab -
/dev/hdd /media/cdrom auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,fscontext=system_ubject_r:removable_t,managed 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,fscontext=system_ubject_r:removable_t,managed 0 0

Can you mount them as root?
If so then just a permission problem try Gay R0b0t's suggestion or add "users" to fstab options to allow users to mount cdrom's

It isn't permissions, root gets the same error as the regular users. Same superblock issues in any case.

Thanks for that suggestion. I have tried everything each poster has suggested, and it didn't work.

Can you insert cd, open xmms, right click + Add, and put /media/cdrom in location. It should show files, or let you play the tracks. Your drive is looking for a data disc and there is none.

RanDrake,

That doesn't work either. When I click on add, then directory, choosing either media/cdrom or /media/cdrecorder both leave the playlist blank. It is getting to the point where I feel that a dreaded reboot may fix the problem - but I know it can't.

Peace,

If all else fails, give it a swift reboot with the steel toes. Just one of those things that is built into the system to annoy you.

Tried that, still the same error. This is infuriating! I'll try again, and this time maybe go to a different kernel version? See if that makes any difference.

Peace,
JimBass
