Unable to login with Gnome

I recently installed Mandriva Corporate Server 3.0 and installed ERP5 on it, work perfectly. I'm new to Linux, and urpmi is great!

I worked 3 days with this installation and did a lot of reboot. But today, I wanted to login as usual (root) and I am unable, I keep comming back to the login screen. I see that the the login and password are good, I even changed the root password.

1. Type my login/password
2. Press enter
3. A red screen and a watch for maybe 1 or 2 secs
4. The screen "tick"
5. Back to the login screen... and on and on...

Anybody already have seen this problem?

Hmm... That sounds like an interesting problem. I wonder if there could be something wrong with your video driver configuration, such as the refresh rates being out of specifications for your monitor. Can you login in non-GUI mode?

Also for security purposes I recommend that you don't log in as root because it opens your system up to hackers, due to file and program permissions.

I don't know how to quit or bypass this login screen?

I even reinstalled Mandriva and I still got the same problem, I'm thinking about a hardware problem! When i installed it back, i took care of the video device, I even tested it and worked well.

I just don't know waht to do with this!

PS : I'll fallow your advice and log as a user end not a root!

Thanks,
NB

Have you tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 when you get to the login screen? If it works it will put you in another terminal most likely a text based one and you could try and modify your X11 settings there.

if you have xorg the configuration file should be here:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

there should be a monitor setting with refresh rates. You just might want to check those out. I really have no idea if this is your problem though.

You should also try logging in as another user to see if it does the same thing.

Hope this helps!
