Unable to login via X

Hello All,

I have a Fedora Core 4 install that worked well for weeks until I attempted to add it to ADS. After going through a number of hoops to try and get it to work, I decided it wasn't that important after all. Then I couldn't login to X.

So, what I can do...

Boot into single user mode,
-> service network start
-> login as root or any user
-> service xfs start (X would not start without this)
-> startx

Then everthing comes up fine. I have modified Desktop -> System Settings -> Authentication to no longer have Winbind selected (both under the User Information tab and the Authentication tab). I have "Use Shadow Passwords", "Use MD5 Passwords" and "Local authorization is sufficient for local users" checked under the Authentication tab.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry if this isn't detailed enough, but maybe you have a stale lock file? I think it was in ~/.X11 or something, and the file end in .lock (I may be totally out as to the location). I had a very similar problem when using FC3 after an upgrade of GNOME, unable to login as anyone, and I had to delete that lockfile.

Hopefully someone can please expand on this?
