Unable to login using GUI

Hi,

I'm using Debian.
I can't login using the GUI login screen.
I can only login using the console.
Has anyone had that happen before?

X works.

Thanks!

Depending on your version of Debian you might have to do something like this from the console, as "root" user:

apt-get update
apt-get install xserver-xorg (OR xserver-xfree86 if you are running Debian Sarge)
apt-get install gdm

Then just do a "shutdown -r now" and you _should_ get the graphical login screen (gdm).

stuck in localhost login

Hi
I may have a similar pb.
I have Mandriva 2006 which worked well till I tried to install the *torrent* packages.
After the installation the torrent logo screen would come up briefly then disappear.
I rebooted the PC and then the system got stuck trying to start mandi daemon.
then timed out and gave me localhost login:
I tried "chkconfig mandi off" (apparently it is not essential to the system)
which allowed the startup to go further but still stopped with the localhost login:
as a newbee I don't know where to go from here can anyone help?

Hi,

The problem is solved...

By chance I thought it may be my password length which was 13 characters.

I changed the password from 13 to 10 characters and now in addition to still being able to login at the console I can now also login at the Graphical login screen.

Thank you for your time and help!

Have a great week!
