Unable to locate package x-windows-system-core. Debian

I am so confused about something. After doing an advanced install of Debian, and selecting the "Install graphical interface" option. I am now in command line logged in as root but when I type things like:
# startx
# apt-get install x-windows-system
They do not work. "Unable to locate package x-windows-system" and similar for startx.

In general, where does this apt-get look? Why do so many packages not work? These are the two things that HAVE worked.
# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade

Thanks guys, I know this is probably pathetic.

have you managed to finish the installation process and reboot from hard drive?
apt-get is a package manager. it looks for packages in repositories. For package to be found exact name of the package needs to be specified.
