Unhappy unable to install any linux distro

i had a problem which i wasnt able to solve .i have an IBM netvista pentium 4
PC with intel845 chipset.i have installed windows xp in one partition.the problem occured when i installed the fedora core 3 latest version of fedora linux project on another primary partition along with a swap partition.the installation went successfully until i reached the command line prompt.when i entered startx
the computer screen first showed a kind of black screen with something written here and there which iwasnt able to read.the same happened when i installed
ubuntu and red hat linux 8.
in ubuntu exceptionally it showed a message that xserver couldnot be located

has it anything to do with my video card?or is it caused by the wrong driver?

pls help

what type of video card and what type of monitor do you have?

by monitor, just words like generic or flatscreen could do.

fedora/redhat is known for having really good (generic) hardware detection/config.

chances are something got messed up in the detection.

during the install are you just clicking next all the way through or are you checking the that the hardware that was selected for you is the right one?

Thanks,
