The first thing you need to do is pay a visit to
linmodems.org, which is the primary hub for discussion about all matters related to setting up controller-less modems under Linux. The instructions on that page are fairly straightforward, once you find them; basically, you'll need to download the scanModem.gz file, run it, and then post the resulting text file to the linmodem mailing list. One of the friendly modem gurus on that list should take it from there.
