"Unable to handle kernel...."
Hello all,
As you've probably guessed I have a Kernel Problem, my some-what possessed p3 450, 128mb running Debian Linux has had a long running problem with it's on-board graphics, some infinitely more intelligent person, than me, suggested that I put a new video card in, which I did a 3dfx 16mb card, and proceeded to switch off the on-board graphics in BIOS, I've come out of BIOS and it all loaded fine graphics very nice, still in text only loading then WHAM...... _________________________________________________________________________ Code: 11 01 8b 44 24 1c 83 c4 0c 5b 5e 5f 5d 59 c3 90 83 ec 05 55 <1>Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000780 printing eip: c019808 *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0002 CPU: 0 EIP: 0010:[<c019808>] Not tainted EFLAGS: 00010202 eax: c6def000 ebx: 00057913 ecx: 00000780 edx: 00000500 esi: c6df6370 edi: c68c9ec8 ebp: c68c9e9c esp : c68c9e00 ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Process getty (pid: 407, stackpage=c68c9000) Stack: c68c9ec8 c02d7528 c68c9ec8 c68c9ee0 c68c9ec8 c02d7528 c68c9ec8 c68c9ee0 0000004f 00000050 0000004f c68c9ea0 c6def018 00000010 c6df6370 0000003 c68c9e9c 00001000 00000003 c01901ff c1274000 c68c9ec8 c68c9e88 00000001 Call Trace: [<c01901ff>] [<c0112ff1>] [<c0195f5b>] [<c0140bc2>] [<c0141ebf>] [<0125033>] [<c012531d>] [<012521c>] [<c012ff55>] [<c0106d7b>] Code: 11 01 8b 44 24 1c 83 c4 0c 5b 5e 5f 5d 59 c3 90 83 ec 08 55 <<blinking cursor here>> __________________________________________________________________________ I don't really know my stuff hence I'm a NewB, I would guess that it might have something to do with not installing any drivers for the new video card. Some help would be REALLY appreciated, I want to get this computer working, my friend says I should just bin it  Also if someone could point out what part of that lot was actually the important thing to report, that would save some of my vision and time, or if it's all important stuff, please it would be very helpful for me and for reporting any problems in the future. I haven't touched anything else and won't until someone suggests something. Once again many thanks. :) George ~ Youth2000 :newbie: |

Right. I suggest that you go back to the old hardware configuration. Then compile the support for your new video card into a new kernel which you install as a second kernel. Set up your two kernels as a dual boot system. Then you can boot into whichever kernel supports the graphics chipset that you are using at the moment. ___________________________________ Be prepared.
