unable to get Xwindows to load..fatal error..pls help

hi
I am pretty new to Linux..
I am running RedHat 8.0 for a while now and everything has been working great, until today..
I had rebooted my machine (it is set to boot into graphical mode) and when it attempts to load into Xwindows I get an error msg.
"Fatal server error:
Could not open default font 'fixed' "

I am not sure where to start to try to resolve this issue, has anyone had this happen bfore?

I am capable of recompiling the kernel and have a tiny bit of knowledge about Linux and such but don't kow where to start to attemp to solve this issue..

any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

thanks in advance

if you can recompile your kernel then you may want to get away from Red Hat. i suggest this to everyone, RH is a beginner distro. it doesn't provide linux quite as well as a distro like slackware. i have been using slackware for a while and it has done me well. i've tried other distros before (and after) using slack and wasn't as satisfied with them. so that's my reccomendation. as for spontaneous errors, that seems impossible to me. try to think of what might have caused it and read the documentation before you ask, a problem of fonts could probably be fixed fairly easily but i don't know where the fonts are stored off the top of my head (i love reference books, i can never rememeber anything. lol.).
