Unable to do man command_name

Hello. Does anybody know why do I get the following error whenever I try to do a man command_name ?
Example: man awk, will give the following output:

Error executing formatting or display command.
System command (cd /usr/man && (echo ".ll 8.1i"; echo ".pl 1100i"; /bin/gunzip -c '/usr/man/man1/awk.1.gz'; echo ".\\\""; echo ".pl \n(nlu+10") | /usr/bin/gtbl | /usr/bin/nroff -S-mandoc | /usr/bin/less -is) exited with status 256.
No manual entry for awk

My distro is Slackware 10
