Unable to detect network cable

I use ubuntu 8.10 and it is unable to detect the network cable. Even when my network cable is plugged in it says "network connection disconnected".
The same network card and cable works in windows. I have seen the settings in ubuntu and the connection is enabled.
I have intel gigabit lan card, intel core 2 duo 1.86 ghz processor and 1 gb of ram.
What should i do?

Where does it say this? On the applet? Did you try this by pinging some machine in your network? I found that in my Ubuntu the applet said no network connection though I could ping my adsl router and browse the internet.

So have you manually assigned a Static IP address to the interface in the /etc/network/interfaces file ? once you modify an interface in that file network-manager ignores the interface. Then gnome-network-manager can not monitor that interface and will tell you the cable is unplugged.

resolution. uninstall network-manager then you don't have to look at the message stating your cable is unplugged.
