Unable to connect to internet on Ubuntu 11.04
I am really new to any Linux OS and I can not connect to the internet (I have wireless network) and it works nicely on Windows 7 on this notebook, but it doesn't find it on ubuntu. Any idea how to do it, as simply as possible? (My notebook is HP 550 if that's any help.)

Hello,
We need to know what kind of device you have, and what drivers are currently loaded for it. Run the following in a terminal, and post the output for us, using code tags please: Code:
ifconfig Josh |
I'm hoping I did it correctly...

The output you posted from the iwconfig command shows your wireless is recognized. The last part of your most recent post shows the wireless card info (part of it is posted below)

Hello DrArroganto,
I have a laptop with same card in it and works almost out of the box on the various *buntu's out there, every time when I upgrade to the next it seems easier. in the beginning i needed to install WICD and NDISWRAPPER with GTK so I could then use the windows driver called BROADCOM43xx.inf. Nowadays I just go to 'additional drivers' while plugged in with a cable to my router to get connected and let it download these drivers. These days support under Ubuntu for this card is pretty good with the open drivers and have become my preferred choice. in the process can also install (although I don't use it myself any more) the built in dial up modem and graphics card drivers for ' proper open gl support. so my question to you is, have you tried this option? regards Ron |
Try typing
Code:
sudo rmmod b43-pci-bridge Code:
sudo modprobe brcm80211 Code:
sudo modprobe brcmsmac |

@fbsduser It says error (Something is missing) @wabbalee any idea where to get them? lol |
Try your package manager and make sure you have all repositories enabled

You need to install the package firmware-b43-lpphy-installer for that device.

Open a terminal and enter the commands
Code:
sudo apt-get update |
DrArroganto, on a ubuntu (assuming it is Ubuntu, not Kubuntu) the package manager name is 'synaptic', sending 'links' so the other user clicks it and downloads it, is not how it works with a linux system.
so start this package manager and see what happens.. when it is finished doing its thing, at the bottom of its window you will see the number of the available packages (on mine 33000+ available and 2000+ installed) once you are in there you do a 'search' (read: not 'quick search') for 'b43' and see what it comes up with, from there, see if it makes any sense at all and tell us what you think. good luck.. |
