unable to connect my phone to my laptop using bluetooth

Hi all,
I am a beginner to Linux in general. I am using Ubuntu 8.04 for my dell laptop. I think that I have installed the drivers needed for bluetooth using synaptic package manager. My bluetooth manager is visible in the right top side of the panel on my desktop. The bluetooth file sharing icon is also ready and I can see it in Applications->Accessories
I can transfer files from my laptop to my phone but I can't from my phone to my laptop. when I try to send files form my phone to my laptop it says "unable to connect." I tried to change the settings of the bluetooth manager, but I could not succeed.
So could you please help my in solving this problem?
Thank you.

Which phone do you have?
How have you tried to change the settings? (rt-click the panel icon?)
Perhaps you need to pair your phone to the computer?
Check that you have configured everything... see:

nable to connect my phone to my laptop using bluetooth

Thanks Simon Bridg,
My phone is nokia 3230.
I installed the requisite packages.
After that I restarted the background Bluetooth
I paired my phone and my laptop as you recommended me.
A new icon, Ready for bluetooth file transfer, is available in the panel.

I tried to send an image from phone to my laptop, but it failed. My phone says "unable to connect."
I can still receive data form my laptop to my phone.
