Unable to configure ethernet card in Redhat Linux 7.3

I get the following error message when configuring Dlink DFE 538
(with DL10038 on the chip) ethernet card.

Bringing up interface eth1:SIOCGIFFLAGS:No Such Device
Failed to bring up eth1.

Kudzu recognizes the card as Realtek 8139t and configures it.
Modules.conf has the entry
alias eth1 8139too
lsmod shows
8139too 16480 (unused)
cat /proc/pci shows the ethernet card.

When the NIC is being recognized and driver being loaded
why do I still get the error.I tried other NIC's but still get the
same error.

Have you tried moving the nic to another pci slot..
I have the 7.3 and 8.0 and haven't had any problems with realtec or intel..
tried " ifconfig eth() your ip address" this binds the nic to the ip add.
Not much help , but it's a start

Do you have more than one ethernet card installed in your PC.
If you only have one modules.conf should be eth0 and not eth1.

Whats the output of the command ifconfig say?

There's is one simple solution...

There's one simple solution...
... the definitive source for updates to many of the linux network drivers, from the team that wrote them. (their words)

I had a very similar problem with that in one of my newest RedHat 8.0 systems, so after doing some digging found that Donald Becker's group (@ www.scyld.com) had a new bundle, so I built it and then "Voila!", it worked the first time.

First consider michealk's earlier remark about your eth0 and eth1 situation, and if that doesn't work, then go to:

http://www.scyld.com/page/support/network/
http://www.scyld.com/network/rtl8139.html
http://www.scyld.com/network/updates.html

I trust that will help,

Those sound like good suggestions. I'm particularly intrigued as to why eth1 is coming up, not eth0. Visit the scyld site, too - they have some things to say about the 'too' adaptation of the 8139 module.

Just one further question: are you sure that the module (driver) you are using is for a PCI card, not an ISA card? Each chipset has a separate module for each card. I had lots of hair and my teeth were ungnashed before I tried configuring my newly acquired rtl8139 PCI card for an ISA slot - now red baldness and stumps!

Good luck with it.

I had trouble with that "too" driver in my RH 7.0-7.3 installations and when I finally bite the bullet and installed that last update at scyld it worked, so when I found myself with an error about the RedHat 8.0 problem, I simply went and checked for a new update, did install the whole package, and it did in fact work just like out of the box.

With regards to the eth1 or eth0 situation, I have found that I can force things into Linux's throat but defaults most often work better for reasons I do not yet understand.

When I attempted what I thought was going to be a careful approach to switching a nic in a RedHat system, I tried placing my "public" eth access on eth1, and using eth0 for my private network, and found that packet traffic was slowed signifcantly and so I proceeded with placing another nic in the eth0 position (it was a 100mb or 10mb nic card decision), and reversing the eth0 and eth1 settings at which time I got my throughput back. The deeper details I do not understand, but that was what workedfurme.

I hope that helped,

try rtl8139 modules

cdc115 12-18-2002 09:46 AM

Thanks everybody the card finally worked with rtl8139 driver

Hi.
I can't install a driver for my D-Link DFE-538TX.
The files that came with the card are here: ff-online.narod.ru
Could you please have a look at them and tell me if it is at all possible to install that driver on my new Mandrake-9.0/
Thank you.
