unable to bring eth1 up

i recently updated a bunch of config files in /etc/hotplug and also /etc/init.d/hotplug with the etc-update command in gentoo, i thought it would be alright updating these but i guess not. when i boot up i get this:

Bringing eth1 up via DHCP... [!!}
ERROR: Problem starting needed services
"netmount" was not started

any ideas how to get my internet up and working again?

first of all, you ought to see what has actually changed. I hope you have the older configs still there least the distribution I use saves backups of config files when it updates them just for this kind of situations...

when you see what has changed, you see what's the problem. if netmount hasn't been started, start it - then try again. if it helps, add netmount to the services that are started at boot or at some other point, and if it doesn't, then see the possible new error message.

Try 'lsmod' to check if the module for your network card is loaded.

If not, you can make an entry in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel...
to make sure it loads.

If eth1 is a hot plug device, it's config could have been blasted by
etc-update. I've noticed that it is very unclever about merging your
existing config into an updated config file. Also if the blasted config
was not in /etc it will not show up in etc-update unless it's directory
has been manually added in /etc/make.conf with CONFIG_PROTECT

Also check that some change in the config hasn't changed the module
load order and swapped eth0 / eth1
