Unable to boot UBUNTU 7.10

In the GRUB Boot Menu I select Windows and Windows boots and runs normal. When I select UBUNTU, the next Screen tells me
"Start Loading, Please wait" and than the Screen stays black.
I am a total Newbie to LINUX and have not very much experience with Windows. My System is as follows:
Motherboard= Gigabyte M61SME-S2, CPU= AMD Athlon Dual Core 6000+, RAM= 2GB, Graphics Card= ATI Radeon HD3870,
Hard Drive1= WD2500JS 250GB running Windows XP/SP2, Hard Drive2= ST325031 250GB UBUNTU installed, Monitor= ViewSonic
Native Res. 1680x1050, used Res. 1280x1024.
Can anyone please help me?

Did you install ubuntu and did it work after install? Did you swap or change boot order in the bios?

Hi Larry, thanks for your Reply. Sorry to answer so late but I have been ill and still not 100%.
Yes I installed UBUNTU and I did not change anything at all. The first boot into UBUNTU after Installation gave me a Screen
in all Colors of the Rainbow, I restarted the PC and than the Screen stays black.

I hope you are feeling better, I will have to let someone else help you from here. I do not have a set laying around with anything close to your video card. I read some articles and this seems to be a problem with your version of ubuntu and your video card. There were a couple of work arounds but none seemed to be a solution. They do not seem to have a decent driver for your video card. Here are some articles you may read

i think its your graphic's you need to boot the live CD of ubuntu and mount it, im not sure but i think the command in the live cd is something like:

sudo mount -t /dev/sda1 /mnt/ubuntu (or where you wish to mount it)

then once you finally have manage to mount it using my vage insructions try configuring xorg (dont forget to sudo for that ether)

configure your graphics for your main system then it should work, failing that check the file using gedit or nano or something (your prefrance) the file path is /boot/grub/menu.lst (or .list) im not sure try one and if its not it will be the other.

maybe you should wait until some one a bit more compitant clarifie's what ive just said

thanks
good luck !
hope you like linux :)

did you install from the live-cd? if so, i would guess that default video settings are going to work for your hardware, as it must have booted into a desktop enviroment that was functional enough for you to install the distro.

can you boot into any live distro (puppy is good for this sort of thing) and post the contents of /boot/grub/grub.lst for futher troubleshooting

cheers

Yes I installed from a life CD, but to boot into it I had to do it in Graphics Safe Mode. The Installation itself had to be done in
No Graphics Mode.

Thanks to all the Guys who have been trying to help me. I solved my Problem ! I purchased a Live CD UBUNTU 8.04 and installed from the new CD and BINGO it all works
perfectly. I suspect there was something wrong with my UBUNTU 7.10 CD , or in UBUNTU 8.04 is better Support for my Graphics Card.
Thanks again.
