unable to boot into XP

I used to have a dual boot system with FC2 & XP everything working fine until this morning when i tried to boot into windows. I dont know what happened, but i get an errror saying "disc error". at frst i loaded my XP cd and booted into recovery mode and did "fixmbr" and rebooted. after rebooting, XP still didnt want to load. next i erased FC2 and installed Mandrake 10.0 to see if by installing a new distro along with a different bootloader it would allow me to boot into XP but that didnt work either. my next step was to boot into mandrake and try to mount the windows drive but im getting the following error
"# mount -t ntfs /dev/hde /mnt/mydir
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hde,
or too many mounted file systems

I should probably mention that I have two IDE hard drives, one for XP and one for Mandrake. The computer is used for work and i have some data that I would lik to recover. Im not sure what can be going wrong. Thanks in advance for the help

Just a guess but i'd say you have a bad hdd on your hands.

that was my first guess, but i was hoping i was wrong. the HDD is about 5 or 6 years old. is there a way to test if the HDD is bad? thanks in advance

The mounting would have worked if you mount the partition instead of the whole drive. hde means you have you wwWindows in a Sata.
