Unable to boot and getting the GRUB on the screen

Hi All,

I am new to Linux..

I have installed Caldera Open Linux 3.2 WorkStation in my machine. I have Windows 2000 and Win98 in my machine already..

The Installation was successful and i was able to view the KDE.
The power went off when i was working on Linux and now when i start my computer i am getting a message GRUB and then it stops..

Earlier it used to give options for selecting an OS ( Linux, Win NT and Win 98) . I am not sure whether this is a command prompt ..what ever i type i am unable to view the characters i have typed there..!

I am unable to boot from my CD ROM Drive may be because of the BIOS settings..

How to resolve this.. Is there any way to solve this with out changing the BIOS settings !!..

Thanks a lot...

did you make a linux or grub boot floppy. If not you might try to find an iso on the web and try booting from you floppy.
in linux you might be able to fix the problem or just reinstall grub.

If you don't have boot floppy, I guess you'll have to visit BIOS > booting devices

Sorry, I don't see other way.

Thanks a lot Anne and Ivo,

I changed the BIOS settings so that the primary booting is from CD ROM and reinstalled the Linux .

One good thing is I haven't lost any data..

After going through the posts here i am some what 'compelled' to go for either RedHat or Mandrake.

Which is the best Linux distribution for Desktops ?? What additional features the above mentioned distributions offer when compared to Caldera Open Linux3.2 Work station.. I am satisfied with the features they are providing...( May be i haven't seen the features provided by others!!)

Pls let me know your comments..

Thanks again..

I would suggest you go through one of the many theads around here dealing with comparisons between the different distros. That should get you far.

I'm quite new on linux, but I'm using RedHat8.0 (satisfy my needs).

You have to start from somewhere, and after that keep looking for something better.
