Unable to access dpkg area: read-only filesystem.

I'm attempting to install my modem drivers with KPackage in Knoppix. I enter my root password, select the .deb file, and it returns:

Code:
dpkg: unable to access dpkg area. Read-only filesystem.
Any ideas as to how to fix this/what this is?

Knoppix as in hard-drive install or as in live
CD? In the latter case you may be out of luck :)

Bugger, LiveCD. Why would they include KPackage if you can't use it?

Because KDE tools commonly come in "bundles".
If you don't get KPackage you may lack other things
you'd actually miss (even in a live CD).
