Question Umount /dev/sdb for ejecting IPOD. Debian couldnt find the device anymore

I want to upload mp3 to ipod. Plug it usb port on my Sony Vaio VGN-FW31M,
Debian 5.0 Lenny System.
It has automounted, but i tried to connect via gtkpod and i made

umount /dev/sdb

and never could mount it again, because when i plugged nothing happen and there is no such node in /dev directory anymore.
But try with other usb devices, there is no problem.

What should i do please?

unplug it and try to plug it again. execute dmesg in your console and see if anything comes up for your sdb device. If it does then its been detected. Sometimes the name will change from sdb to sdc or sdb1 or whatever. So run dmesg and look for something similar usually it will give the hardware name such as " Apple Ipod " so it will be a good indication to you of where your device is.

ipod, mount
