ubuntu wont detect harddrive to partition during install

I have only the one hard drive in my computer, SATA western digital 500gb
Now I had a problem with getting to BIOS with the hard drive connected, when disconnected or even with an old IDE hard drive connected, runs to BIOS fine. With that im sure i cant claim its a Ubuntu problem.
Im only installing Ubuntu and theres nothing currently installed.
IF anyone can offer some advice...Im pulling my hair out.
Thanks

Just a quick question, have to ask, did you install the SATA drivers that came with your motherboard (would be on a floppy) while running the win CD. Hitting F6 when prompted?

I have ran into this same issue once before. I resolved it by changing bios to indicate the drive was an IDE drive and not SATA. For some reason Ubuntu would then install-- after that I went back into bios and specified the drive as SATA and every thing worked. I have no idea why that would do anything, but I have seen several discussions about the exact same issue. You may want to try that. And if any one has any ideas why that would work I would be interested in knowing.
