ubuntu wireless configuration

I've been following the ubuntu documents on WLAN configuration, but it is far more convoluted and inconsistent with my system than I have patience. Is there an easier way?

It's best to tell us what the specific issue is....

I don't know anything about the Ubuntu methods and tools, but I like to use WICD (regardless of distro).

You don't say if the basic device is working. Open a terminal and enter "sudo iwconfig" If it says "no wireless extensions" on all the devices, then you will need to install a driver. For that, we'll need to know what your wireless card is.
