UBUNTU v8.10 Wireless connection PROBS
Hiya guys thanks for help with the previous posts to all those that have helped.
I have instaled UBUNTU v8.10 on a my Acer 3690 laptop using a different HDD i had stored and eveything works fine except my wireless. I have Virgin Meia 20Mb connection and was supplied a Netgear WGR614 router and when i use the modem direct through the lan cable the internet works fine but when i try to connect wireless UBUNTU says there is no WLAN connection present is there anything i can do, i really like this OS. Also please could anyone tell me if there is a dedicated website with linux compatible software and is there a program that converts to DVD available. Thanks to all that will help me CHEERS |
first you need to find out what wireless card you are using, open a terminal and type lspci and post it here. There are several websites that can help you with linux software, just google it.As for the dvd programs I use k9copy to rip dvd's and DeVeDe to convert/burn video files to dvd format.

http://www.linuxalt.com/ http://linuxappfinder.com/alternatives As for the wireless, I'd almost bet that your device is a broadcom, but when you post your lspci, you'll get more help. Edit: Judging by Posts #8-#10 at the link below... I'd say you almost definitely have Broadcom... I'm not sure how to get those working in Linux, but I think they require a firmware upgrade. http://ge.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=766100 IGF |
The Wireless connection is Broadcom driver version 4.102.15.61
