ubuntu to ubuntu vnc connection only ip

Using ubuntu on client and server machines - installed the vnc4server on one machine
via the directions here...

Installed the vncviewer on another machine
the directions say to log in with the hostname:

vncviewer localhost:1

However the vncserver will only accept logins with the ip address of the host - not the hostname

This gets me into the host, however not in to the working desktop on the server.
I get another window - this is what it shows on the title of the VNC window:

If I run a ps on the vncviewer window it displays the processes running on that server
if I run this on the server it will kill the window of the client:
vncserver -kill packard-desktop:1

It this just how the vnc process works with ubuntu - I was hoping for something that
would view and countrol the actual screen that I was working on

What changes have to be made to the vnc4server to accept requests for the host name

i have updated the setting on the server - from the remote desktop gui
i conifgured it to connect from the default port
unchecked the ask for the confirmation

and then connecting with this command

vinagre hostname:0

and i get a desktop window - just not the one that has all my open windows on it.
I was looking form something that works like pcanywhere in windows.

when i connect from red hat to windows at work, i see everything on the windows desktop -
